Οι αριθμοί τους (στο ΛΟΤΤΟ) κέρδισαν 2 φορές!!!

Celebration ... Sue and Lee Mullen bag £5million six years after missing out on £8million jackpot

A COUPLE who missed out on an £8.5MILLION lottery jackpot because they couldn't afford a quid for their usual ticket six years ago were finally celebrating today - after scooping a £5million win.

Hard-up mum-of-six Sue Mullen and husband Lee spent their last £1 at the end of a trying week in 2005 on nappies and couldn't afford a flutter on their usual numbers.

They were "gutted" when they realised that the special family numbers they normally chose had come up and they had lost out on a fortune that would have changed their lives.

The couple were so stunned they stopped playing the lottery completely until last month - fearing they were jinxed and would never win again.

But they have now been left gobsmacked after their luck finally turned last Friday and they netted a £4.8million share of the £25million pound EuroMillions prize.

Sue, 40, said today: "We stopped playing after missing out all those years ago.

"But we decided to start again a few weeks ago and I was stunned when I realised our numbers had come up.

"I checked the numbers online on Saturday and just couldn't believe it. I was checking the numbers again and again.

"I refreshed the page with the results so many times I broke a button on my laptop. You really never think it's going to be you. People like us don't win, it's a dream come true."

Ex-marine engineer Lee, 38, was invalided out of the Navy due to a nerve condition called genitofemoral neuralgia 13 years ago and has since been living on his Veteran's Pension.

The couple also had a car accident several years ago which left Sue with serious back problems and unable to work.

Lucky ... couple nearly did the double after numbers came up twice

The family have been scraping by on £300-a-week benefits and living with their three children, plus one of Sue's from a previous relationship. Her others are grown up.

They hunted for car boot bargains, cheap supermarket offers and were barely able to afford mobile phone credit, while Lee drove a tired old Ford Mondeo.

Lee, from Grimsby, Lincs, said: "We used to do the lottery religiously with the same numbers, family birthdays and such.

"But then about six years ago we missed a week because we spent the pound for the ticket on nappies for our young daughter.

"We missed out on £8.5million. We were totally gutted and couldn't face doing it again until recently.

"We have had a really tough time, particularly this winter. The weather was so bad we had to use a lot of heating, and the bills were huge. We were worrying about money every single day.

"There was not a lot of money to spread around.

"We finally started doing the lottery again only a few weeks ago. My mobile phone has been going crazy with people ringing to congratulate me, but I can't call them back because I still haven't got any credit."

Lee's career was spent readying HMS ships for service abroad, but his nerve condition rapidly worsened and left him struggling to move the left side of his body.

He has been unable to work since being discharged in 1998 and the condition has now developed into arthritis.

Sue — whose children are aged from six to 22 — is registered disabled, from permanent nerve damage to her back and walks with a stick.

She said she will still enjoy hunting for bargains at Sunday morning car boot sales, adding: "We have seen so many stories about people winning vast amounts on the lottery and it turns into a nightmare, they spend it all in a couple of years.

"We are determined not to fall into that trap and we won't, we are not going to get ideas above our station and have very supportive family and friends.

"Even though we won't ever have to worry about money again I won't ever get out of the habit of looking for bargains.

"I went to Asda at the weekend after we won and was still looking for the cheap out of date items."

They only started playing again because of a dream Sue had that told her they were due some luck.

She said: "It's really weird. I had a dream around Christmas time that I won £4.6million on the lottery. It is quite spooky - I was only £200,000 out.

"Lee thought I was bonkers when I told him we had to start playing again but I just had a feeling."

The couple plan to take their children to Disneyland, but Sue will have to get a passport — because she's never had enough money to go abroad before.

Lee said: "We will buy a new house but stay in the Grimsby area because we love it here.

"Sue's mum is in a care home in Plymouth and was going to have to sell her house to pay for her care, but that won't be a problem now and we are hoping to move her up here.

"I am a big Manchester United fan but have obviously not been able to afford to go with the prices. Now me and my lad will definitely go to a few games.

"I've also got a T-Reg Ford Mondeo with pieces dropping off and bits broken, but I'm going to keep it because I will look at it and always remember where I came from."

The couple bought the winning ticket from Arian Newsagents in Grimsby.

The winning numbers where 2, 11, 24, 35, 47 and lucky stars 5 and 9, picked using the lucky dip system. They were one of five winners to share the jackpot of £24,368,199, claiming their share — £4,873,639.80.
